Farm Stand
The Farm Stand is at the Greenhouse and Nursery offering vegetables, fruit and herbs as available. Fresh herbs: mint, rosemary, basil, sage, thyme, comfrey, sweet marjoram, and rhubarb are available daily. Other fruits and vegetables will be available in season.
We believe that garden produce is only as healthy as what is put into it. We have not, nor intend to, fertilize with chemical products. We utilize composted chicken, goat, cow, and rabbit manures as well as composted kitchen scraps for fertilizer. We also add a generous amount of seaweed gathered from our local beaches annually. Other types of fertilizer used includes Alaska Fish Fertilizer and a homemade fish fertilzer and seaweed brew.
For pest control, we hand pick slugs and bugs, utilize chickens and ducks to eat pests during the off-season, and use diatomaceous earth as needed. In extreme instances of slug infestation we may utilize Slug Bait.
Weed control has certainly been a challenge in previous years. We would like to thank our many friends from the Neah Bay Community that have helped us "weed" the garden: Beth, Jessica, Vanessa, Jerry, Peanut, Libby and friends, Dan and his family, and many other friends.
Edible Weeds - Lamb's Quarters is not only a weed, but it's delicious and similar to spinach. Lamb's Quarters was one of the edible weeds discovered in our garden by Jessica (who is very knowledgeable about edible plants and mushrooms). After the discovery, we added Lamb's Quarters to our salad greens mix. (Photo of Lamb's Quarter pending)
Do you have a difficult time getting your child to eat vegetables? Often trying a new vegetable in a different setting is all it takes.
One family visiting the farm last year happily visited the animals. When we got to the garden, I asked if they would like to pick some vegetables. The parent said, "No, we just wanted to see the animals. She's not a vegetable eater". The child immediately piped in with, "I want to pick something". We then began a garden tour that ended with a large number of vegetables to take home as well as sampling in the garden.
One idea is to help your child grow vegetables themselves which builds an appreciation of the beauty and work it takes to nurture a plant from a seed to harvest. A large flower pot with a few seeds on the front porch is a good start. Or visit Windy Acre Farm, Garden and Rabbitry on the next Farm Day to plant some seeds in a pot to take home (see calendar).
For 2023, we will are trialing a honor system rather then set hours.
